Edgar Newton

In March 1998, a piece of wood flipped into his front wheel and he hit the deck, fracturing his skull and breaking his neck. He wasn't wearing a helmet then, and back on the bike, he still isn't: "OK, it might have saved me the odd crack in my skull, but the top vertebrae are right up under the skull. It could be that the slight extra momentum provided by a helmet, or a slightly different angle of impact on the road could have resulted in the Full Christopher Reeves. Or death."
He remains 6'4".
